Department of mathematics

Student Christopher has four pencils and seven apples。How many pancakes can fit on the roof?

Educating today's students for a life of leadership and service requires mathematical skills。Our Mathematics department is dedicated to helping FMS students develop curiosity, reasoning and analytical skills。Developing problem solving skills and learning how to be a critical thinker is driven by mathematical intelligence。Small class sizes allow for one-on-one support to help each student overcome fears and resistance to working with difficult material。 The FMS math program includes ongoing SAT preparation and prepares students for college-level work。Course progress is based on mastery of the content presented。

Basic mathematics

This course provides basic mathematical skills so that students will be prepared to proceed to pre-algebra。

prealgebra

This course emphasizes the eight parts of speech, the construction of vocabulary, and the sentence structure involved。Introduce students to short topic essays and public speaking。The literary survey includes selected novels and short stories。

Algebraic me

Algebra I covers the symbols and language of algebraic sentences。Students learn to use rational numbers and polynomials。Before dealing with graphs and basic trigonometry, the study of equations is crucial。

geometry

Geometry involves the study of figures, such as triangles, parallelograms, circles, spheres, rectangles, planes, and cones。Geometry is more than the study of lines, angles and polygons。It is a thinking exercise and teaches a new logical way of thinking。 (Prerequisite: Algebra I。)

Algebra II

In addition to reviewing and extending Algebra I topics, students learn about relations and functions, set theory, fundamental trigonometry, logarithms, vectors, permutations and combinations, probability, and other related areas。 (Prerequisite: Algebra I)

trigonometry

Trigonometry can be offered as an alternative to pre-calculus and calculus depending on the needs of participants。Prerequisites Demonstrated proficiency in Algebra II or equivalent is required to enroll in this course。The course will begin with a review of basic to advanced geometry and related algebra, with a focus on functions。This course will also add artistic value by drawing reflections, translations, expansions and mosaics of various functions。

Trigonometric Algebra II

Students with a higher level of Algebra II will be selected for Algebra II with trigonometry。The course covers Algebra II concepts including polynomial expansion, analytic geometry, exponential and logarithmic functions, complete sum of squares time permits, matrices and determinants, and will include trigonometry concepts。

precalculus

As a solid foundation of calculus, Pre-Calculus is an excellent college mathematics preparation course。Advanced algebra covers relations and functions, graphs, equations of higher order, and computation。Trigonometry includes trigonometric applications, functions, graphs and equations。Advanced geometry studies include parabolas, ellipses, and hyperbolas。This course ends with matrices and vectors。 (Prerequisite: Geometry and Algebra II)。

Calculus (AB and BC)

This advanced Mathematics program is offered to selected students who have demonstrated excellence in the field of mathematics。Pre-calculus must be completed with an average of at least C。Taught as an AP course。
